The start of summer kicks off today with the arrival of the Summer Solstice, bringing warmer weather to the New York City area, and with it a great excuse to start planning your visit to NYC beaches.
Before you pack your beach towel and flip flops, however, let’s take a look at some of the top beaches near NYC to ensure a fun-filled (and stress-free) seaside experience.

Brighton Beach
Located in the area that was immortalized in Neil Simon’s play, Brighton Beach Memoirs, otherwise known as the southside of Brooklyn to New Yorkers, Brighton Beach plays as the less-touristy favorite to neighboring Coney Island. Also labeled as “Little Odessa” by locals for its Russian and Eastern European-influenced restaurants and shops, Brighton Beach offers daily lifeguarding from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer season, and features early morning biking and skating on its beachside pathways.

Coney Island Beach & Boardwalk
The beauty of Coney Island is its accessibility to summer-related activities that don’t necessarily involve a visit to its 3 miles of stunning beaches. If navigating throngs of beachgoers isn’t on the menu for your visit, a short trip to Luna Park is guaranteed to provide the kind summer entertainment everyone enjoys. In fact, tourists and locals alike often make the trip for a day at the beach and an evening at the park. And with the proper amount of planning, it’s worth taking advantage of both while you’re there.

Fort Tilden Beach
If privacy is the name of your beachgoing game, Fort Tilden Beach makes for a great getaway in every sense of the word. Originally a military installation before transitioning into a beach area, Fort Tilden has remained relatively untouched since being decommissioned in 1974. The downside for travelers to the area, however, is its somewhat challenging accessibility, as Tilden offers no vehicle or subway access for this more secluded beach experience. We should also mention that the beach doesn’t have lifeguards on hand either, and the limited dining options make packing a lunch even more essential.
luxor limo best nyc beaches ocean beach park
Ocean Beach Park
Just as the city’s name implies, Long Beach offers a rather lengthy beachfront area (4 miles!) edged by a 2.2-mile long boardwalk at Ocean Beach Park. Considered a haven for the surf crowd and beach volleyball leagues, Ocean Beach Park offers more than other New York City beaches with its indoor pool and playground for the little ones, and fishing pier, marina, and free concerts for adults during the summer. What’s more, the beach’s nearby eateries make it easy to grab a quick meal before heading back into the water – or working on your tan.

Fire Island
As NYC beaches go, Long Island offers some of the best options for beachgoers, with one particular Long Island beach standout being Fire Island. A beach, state park, county park and beautiful community rolled into one destination (or now two, thanks to Hurricane Sandy), Fire Island offers the quintessential experience for nearly any summer activity. So, if you’re in the mood for hiking, camping, swimming, tanning, or learning more about the area at the Fire Island Wilderness Visitor Center, this could end up being the ideal spot for indulging every interest.
